The Truth About Therapy - Myths and Realities
Myth #1:
Well, this just isn't true. Did you know that in any given year, about half of all households have someone who will receive mental health treatment? Therapy is for regular people who may find themselves struggling with a particular issue (longstanding or fairly recent) and would like professional assistance to help them regain control of their lives. Seeking therapy is simply a sign that you recognize a problem and intend to do something about it...not that you are crazy!
|
Myth #2:
Actually, for most people, counselling is a relatively short-term investment of their time. While the duration of treatment will of course depend on your presenting concerns and your goals, the days of multi-year treatment are long gone. Many people notice changes and improvement in just several sessions. At Green Leaf Psychological, we are solution-focused, goal-orientated, and will help you make real changes in your life so that hopefully, you no longer need therapy or require our services!
|
Myth #3:
No, this is definitely not true. For therapy to work, there must be respect, trust, and a working alliance between you and your therapist. While it can sometimes be difficult to discuss certain issues, you will never be forced to talk about something you do not want to. This is your service - you decide what you wish to work on and we will do our best to help you. Incidentally, most people find that when they trust their psychologist, they feel pretty comfortable talking about just about anything...but this will always be up to you.
|
Myth #4:
My therapist will tell me exactly what I should do and what I should think. This is a very common therapy myth. Instead of viewing your psychologist as someone who "has all the answers and will tell me what to do", it is far better to see him or her as an expert in human behaviors and relationships who will help you discover your own answers, reach your goals, and guide you towards making healthier life choices.
|
Myth #5:
Psychologists don't offer any real advice in therapy. This myth is based on the theory that offering direct advice would be imposing their own biases on the client and interferes with the counselling process. Although there is some validity to this, our clients do expect us to offer opinions, guidance, and expert advice...and we are happy to do so.
|
Myth #6:
With a psychologist, I'll need to talk a lot about my childhood and my dreams. Yes, we will probably want to review your family history when we first meet, but depending on your concerns and goals, your childhood certainly does not need to be the focus of subsequent sessions. Dreams, unless you have specific concerns you wish to discuss, are rarely a part of therapy.
|
Myth #7:
Therapy is very expensive. There is very little variation between the fees of different psychologists in Nova Scotia. True, some "therapists" may have lower rates, but note that the term "therapist" is not regulated and literally anyone can use the title - even if they have questionable credentials and very little relevant education or training (please be careful when choosing someone).
Our fees (we do not charge HST) are covered by most extended insurance plans and are even tax deductible as a medical expense. |
Myth #8:
I should be able to solve all my problems on my own. In therapy, we sometimes talk about unrealistic "shoulds" such as "I should never make mistakes", "Everyone should like me", "I should never get upset", etc. Believing that you should be able to solve all your problems without help may also fall into this category. When we are sick, we go to a doctor because we don't want to needlessly suffer, know that is important to take care of our physical health, and want to feel better again. Similarly, if you have personal concerns, you can get help from one of our psychologists because you don't want to needlessly suffer, know that it is important to take care of your mental health, and want to feel better again. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness, it just means that you are taking control of your life.
