Academic Assessment for Children, Teens, and Adults
Testing for Academic & School Problems in Halifax
It is common misconception that psychologists conduct psych-ed assessments only to diagnosis relatively serious problems such as Learning Disorders, Dyslexia, or ADHD. Although we do provide these services at our Halifax clinic, many students can also benefit from a more general academic assessment, IQ Assessment, or even a Giftedness Assessment.
A Problem with Report Cards? Even if you are not worried that your child may have a learning disorder or dyslexia, a comprehensive academic / psych-ed assessment can be extremely beneficial for your child or teen's success in school.
If you are a parent, you may remember receiving your own report cards when you were in school. Your school performance may have been reported using traditional letters (A, B, C, D, and F) or percentages (Science: 82%, Math: 76%, English: 83%).
Today, in Nova Scotia and across Canada, how school grades are reported is quite different. Many parents are disappointed with report cards that are largely focused on what has been taught in school...rather than how well a child has actually performed in class, on homework, or on tests!Unfortunately, these types of report cards may include many paragraphs of text but few (if any) comments / feedback specific to your child. Furthermore, grades may be limited to vague categories such as "has not yet mastered material" or "in the process of mastering material".
If you worry that you may be lacking concrete feedback on your child's school performance, an academic assessment with Green Leaf Psychological can provide a detailed, honest academic evaluation that is specific to your child or teen. Depending on your questions or concerns, you can request an assessment on reading ability, mathematics, writing skills, verbal expression or comprehension, memory, IQ, or other areas of focus.
Why get an Academic Assessment?
Although screening for possible Learning Disorders is certainly an important benefit of academic testing, thankfully most children do not have learning difficulties that warrant an official diagnosis.
Why bother with a psych-ed assessment if a Learning Disorder is not suspected?
The reasoning is very simple. Academic testing will help your child or teen demonstrate their true potential in school by:
1) Addressing and giving extra attention to relative academic weaknesses 2) Developing, expanding on, and taking advantage of academic strengths
