For children aged four to eleven, therapy for emotional, social, or behavioural problems often takes the form of "play" (i.e., "play therapy"). Just like adults, children experience a wide range of of emotions and can struggle with depression, anxiety, emotional regulation problems, and interpersonal issues. However, unlike adults, children (especially young children) have not developed the verbal skills to clearly communicate their distress. |

How a Child Psycholgist Uses Play Therapy
Children are not yet able to understand and communicate their problems to others the way that adults do...and this means that adult-like talk therapy is simply not suitable for children.
When working with a child psychologist at our Halifax office, play during the session is focused on emotional healing, growth, and behavioural change.
Play therapy with one of our specialized clinicians is therapeutic to children as it allows them to express their emotions, worries, fears, and frustrations in a controlled and safe environment. The child psychologist guides the play to help the child express him/herself, will reflect on observed struggles and frustrations, and through play, will offer healthier ways to manage their emotions and gain control over their behaviours.

Involving Parents in Child Therapy
For younger children, observations and progress during play therapy may be shared with parents, who may also be invited to join in the sessions.
Parents may offered their own individual sessions to discuss new developments at home and recommendations based on observations in therapy.
