Are you interested in an IQ or intelligence test for yourself or your child in the Halifax, Dartmouth, or Bedford area?
If you have just started to research IQ assessment, there is a good chance that your search results (in addition to our website) produced many links for "free online IQ testing".
Although these tests can be somewhat amusing / entertaining, unfortunately they are simply not valid or reliable measures of intellectual ability.
Formal IQ Testing in Halifax The goal of a formal IQ assessment with a psychologist is to obtain a valid estimate of a person's intellectual functioning across a wide range of cognitive abilities.
A common myth of IQ tests is that they only measure "book smarts" or tangible information someone has gained from the world (think Jeopardy contestants). In reality, this is a very small component of what a modern IQ test measures. It has long been known that "intelligence" is comprised of many different interrelated mental abilities - many of which can be accurately measured using formal IQ tests that have benefited from almost a century of development and rigorous standardization.
For example, at Green Leaf Psychological in Halifax we administer the two most widely used and accepted measures of IQ - the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children. The WAIS, for example, is actually made up of fifteen (!) different sub-tests and four major indices (Verbal Comprehension, Perceptual Reasoning, Working Memory, and Processing Speed). Needless to say, there is a wealth of useful information that comes from an IQ test - not just a final IQ score!
Why Get an IQ Test? IQ tests are one of the most common and, in our opinion, one of the most useful tests that are administered by psychologists.
Reasons for seeking an IQ assessment with one of our psychologists include:
Personal curiosity (yes, this is a common reason!)
How Long Does an IQ Test Take? Most IQ assessments can be completed within two hours if there is no additional testing required.
Do I Need to Study for an IQ Test? No. An IQ test is intended to be a estimate of your general intelligence across a wide range of cognitive domains. Studying is not necessary and is unlikely to produce a higher score.
How Should I Prepare for an IQ Test? Make sure to sleep well the night before your test and have a nutritious meal before your assessment. It is generally best to schedule testing for the morning or early afternoon.
