At Green Leaf, not only do we offer comprehensive ADHD assessments for children and adults, we now also help children with an ADHD diagnosis (and their families) understand what this means and how to move forward following a diagnosis.
"Focus & Flourish: Learning About My ADHD" is a single session, post-diagnosis, small group meeting for children ages 7-10 and a parent.
In this group, one of our psychologists provides an interactive feedback-style session for children about their ADHD diagnosis with other children in and around their age group.
Discussing ADHD in a small group setting allows children to not feel alone in their diagnosis and also provides supportive and helpful education on understanding ADHD, managing symptoms, and having a happy and successful life with the diagnosis.
One parent is also invited to join their child during this session :)

What Does the Session Include?
- Information on what ADHD is and how ADHD can impact your child's schooling and day-to-day life. We provide children with examples of how ADHD might be impacting their lives, help them identify areas that they struggle with, and understand why they are struggling.
- We discuss what can be done to help with ADHD symptoms including a breakdown of what may be helpful at home and at school.
- It is critical for children who are diagnosed with ADHD to begin to develop self-advocacy skills. The concept of self-advocacy will be introduced along with some examples of how to self-advocate for support both at home and at school.
- It is very important that self-esteem is maintained for children who struggle with ADHD symptoms. An emphasis will be placed on strengths associated with ADHD (e.g., being able to hyper-focus on certain activities) and identifying individuals with ADHD who are well known and successful. This will provide them with re-assurance that it is very possible to be successful and that their diagnosis will not hold them back.
- Finally, at the end of the session, children will be provided with the opportunity to ask any questions that they have about ADHD.
